F-35 STOVL goes supersonic for the first time

F-35 STOVL goes supersonic for the first time
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program continues to rack up the milestones with the F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant breaking the sound barrier for the first time. The F-35B, which completed its first vertical landing in March, hit Mach 1.07 (727 miles per hour) in an off-shore test on June 10 and will be put through a series of supersonic flights that will gradually take the aircraft towards its top speed of Mach 1.6. The F-35B STOVL marks the first time in 100 years of military aviation that a plane has combined radar-evading stealth, VTOL and supersonic speed and may go some way towards justifying the program's other milestone achievement of being the most expensive weapons program in military history. The Farmers Airship sets World Distance Record—on the Today Show!
    VCTO, Friday 02 July 2010 - 23:20:22 // comment: 0

Eureka has lots to brag about. She’s the biggest airship on earth, the only Zeppelin in the Americas and hangs out with astronauts. But late last month she added another superlative to that list, world-record holder!

On May 25, the Farmers Airship, broke the modern airship world distance record. Piloted by Airship Ventures' Director of Flight Operations Jim Dexter, Eureka soared between her home base at Moffett Field in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Brown Field in San Diego. Taking just over 10 hours, the flight covered 459.3 miles, breaking the standing Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) record previously held by a Russian team by 70.2 miles.

Joining the record-breaking Airship Ventures team aboard were some special guests, including Kevin Kelso, Chief Marketing Officer of Farmers Insurance, and NBC’s Jenna Wolfe, who documented the journey for the Today Show.

F-35 Lightning II nails first vertical landing
The F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter has completed its first vertical landing. The Short Take-Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) demonstration saw Lead Pilot Graham Tomlinson perform an 80-knot (93 miles per hour) short takeoff, a one minute hover and a vertical descent onto a 95-foot square pad riding more than 41,000 pounds of thrust provided by the Rolls-Royce LiftFan system. CARTER SIGNS $4 MILLION INCENTIVE AGREEMENT
    VCTO, Saturday 08 May 2010 - 15:17:07 // comment: 0

Carter Aviation Technologies, LLC of Wichita Falls, Texas, has completed negotiations with the Wichita Falls Economic Development Corporation (WFEDC) on a multi-million dollar job incentive program. Signed on April 14, 2010, the agreement provides $4 million of operating capital in the form of a loan to Carter to facilitate increased development activity and corporate expansion. Carter is ramping-up to meet the requirements of a new license for its technology. Carter's Slowed Rotor/Compound (SR/C) Aircraft Technology, a combination of rotorcraft and fixed-wing aerodynamics, has been licensed by AAI Corporation, an operating unit of Textron Systems.

First USAF CV-22 Osprey Lost in Combat

A U.S. Air Force Bell/Boeing CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor crashed April 9 near Qalat City, Afghanistan, killing four aboard and injuring “numerous” others, according to the Pentagon. The tiltrotor was assigned to NATO’s International Security Assistance Force and was believed to be on a troop insertion mission. Claims by the Taliban that it shot down the aircraft could not be confirmed. The $76 million CV-22 is a modified and more expensive version of the MV-22 developed for the Marine Corps. It features longer range and better electronic-warfare capability. Two MV-22s crashed in the U.S. during 2000 while on training missions.

    Blade Separation Preceded EC135 Crash
Preliminary indications are that blade failure played a role in the fatal crash of a 2000 American Eurocopter EC135T1 near Cave Creek, Ariz., on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses on the ground reported hearing a popping sound and then seeing parts fly off the helicopter before it rolled several times, pitched 90 degrees nose-down into the ground and caught fire. The NTSB confirmed to AIN that parts of the rotor blades were found half a mile from the crash site. The helicopter was en route from Flagstaff to Scottsdale Air Park when it crashed in a desert wash between two houses, killing all five aboard. Among the passengers were the helicopter’s owner–billionaire Thomas Stewart, CEO of Services Group of America–his wife, five-year-old daughter and the pilot. Stewart is remembered for unsuccessfully trying to get the city of Seattle to approve a helipad on the roof of his office building there, and eventually taking the matter to the Washington State Supreme Court.
